SGH Panic Button System: Protecting Healthcare Workers, Improving Response

SGH Website | 27 Feb 2025

Singapore General Hospital (SGH) is implementing a panic button system for its emergency department staff. This initiative addresses a significant increase in abuse cases against healthcare workers. The easily activated button discreetly alerts security and duty staff, and triggers a public announcement. SGH aims to acquire 160 panic buttons to protect nearly 400 employees. One staff member recounts a previous incident with an intoxicated and verbally abusive patient where the button provided quick assistance.

Initially, SGH explored existing “off-the-shelf” panic button solutions in the market. However, these proved to be too costly. SGH then collaborated with its existing real-time location system vendor to re-engineer a staff tag into a functional panic button.
